On 11 February 2026, the European Commission (Commission) issued a Call for Evidence on a Commission Communication on competitiveness in the Single Banking Market.
As announced in the Savings and Investments Union (SIU) Communication adopted on 19 March 2025, the Commission will publish in 2026 a Communication on the Single Market in Banking, including an analysis of the banking sector’s competitiveness. The Communication will analyse the competitiveness of the EU banking sector and its capacity to finance the EU economy. It will identify what works well, as well as challenges to competitiveness, competition and market integration. It will assess the effects of an incomplete Single Market and Banking Union and evaluate whether there are elements that create unwarranted complexity in the current regulatory framework, whilst recognising its main objective of securing resilience.
The Call for Evidence seeks information from stakeholders on the competitiveness of the Single Market in Banking, on potential barriers affecting its proper functioning and possible ways to improve integration, efficiency and competitiveness. The deadline for comments is 11 March 2026.
