On 26 January 2026, the European Banking Authority (EBA) issued a report on the medium- to long term objectives of its interest rate risk in the banking book (IRRBB) Heatmap, including key observations and recommendations for institutions and supervisors.

In January 2024, the EBA published its Heatmap following its earlier scrutiny of IRRBB, setting out a roadmap for IRRBB monitoring across short- medium- and long-term areas of focus. The report now published completes the medium to long term milestones defined in the IRRBB Heatmap and builds on the guidance provided during the first phase of the examination, which was reflected in the first IRRBB Heatmap implementation report on the short to medium term objectives.

Whilst the report does not establish new regulatory requirements it does point to areas of supervisory attention informed by recent experience, prevailing market practices, and emerging risks. It provides an analytical review and puts forward recommendations in four priority areas:

  • The application of the 5-year cap on the repricing maturity of non-maturity deposits.
  • The modelling of commercial margins in the context of Article 4(4) of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/856.
  • The definition and application of the Credit Spread Risk in the Banking Book perimeter.
  • The use and effectiveness of hedging strategies in managing IRRBB.

The EBA will continue to monitor developments in this area and in particular it will continue its analysis of quantitative and qualitative Pillar 3 disclosure practices. This will complement its ongoing monitoring of regulatory products, with a view to enhancing transparency and comparability.
