On 22 November 2021, the European Commission announced it was launching a public consultation on the Mortgage Credit Directive review.

The Commission explains that it is seeking to establish whether the current rules are adapted to digitalisation, the need to enhance sustainability and COVID-19. The Commission is also looking at ways to improve the existing rules to ensure that they continue to guarantee a high level of consumer protection, further the aims of the Single Market, and contribute to financial stability. The deadline to respond to the consultation is 28 February 2022.
