The European Banking Authority (EBA) has published a report on asset encumbrance.
The report notes that the overall weighted average encumbrance ratio, i.e. all encumbered assets and collateral received relative to total assets and collateral in the EU in March 2015 was 27% but with a wide dispersion across institutions and countries.
The report also notes that based on a comparison of the results of this report with an analysis of the European Systemic Risk Board in 2011, there is no indication for an increase in the level of asset encumbrance over the last years. However, the trend in the level of total asset encumbrance and in particular the availability of collateral for central bank funding should be carefully monitored going forward.
